Trash Collection

Schedule

Trash  must be placed in a single can. No loose bags of trash will be picked up.

Normal pickup of yard and garden debris begins in March. Residents are encouraged to manage yard waste on their property by mulching, backyard composting, or not generating yard waste at all if possible. No plastic bags are allowed, per county rules (see "Yard Debris Guidelines" below).

Republic does not pick up trash or recycling on Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s Day. It follows its normal schedule on all other holidays.

When delays in service occur, and assuming our neighborhood is not inaccessible by road because of weather or some other problem, our trash hauler says its crews will continue into the next day until the route is complete.

No Glass Allowed in Curbside Recycling

Fairfax County trash and recycling haulers no longer accept recycling materials that contain glass. This means that you should place glass items in your trash, not your recycling container.

Another option is to recycle your glass at the special purple glass recycling bins located throughout the county. The closest one to us is near the Lorton landfill, at the Fairfax County Recycling and Disposal Center, 9850 Furnace Rd, Lorton, VA 22079, +1 703-690-1703. There is also one at the Springfield District Governmental Center on Rolling Road. The county is considering adding other locations as well.

Yard Debris Guidelines

Republic collects yard debris (leaves, grass clippings, branches, etc.) on Wednesdays from March 1 through December 24. The company states the following limits and requirements for pickup:

Hazardous Waste

The following are items you can dispose of with regular trash:

Republic Services will NOT pick up the following: flammable products, oil, paint cans, tires, animal carcasses, manure, tree stumps, dirt, stone, rock, brick, lead, acid/wet cell batteries, railroad ties, toxic materials, bio-hazardous materials or waste, tanks containing propane, oxygen, or helium, items containing gas or oil, explosives, live ammunition or weapons, large amounts of animal waste, oversized brush (longer than 4 feet in length or 6 inches in diameter), bags weighing more than 50 pounds, or any items that cannot be safely loaded by trash crews for removal or any items that may damage hauling equipment.

Fairfax County operates two permanent disposal sites for household hazardous waste:

These sites accept a wide variety of items that should not go out with regular trash, ranging from acids and automobile fluids to weed killers.
